Development and integration of microbial fuel cell stacks for powering low energy applications
The aim of this project is to develop a portable microbial fuel cell (MFC) pack capable of powering, in a sustainable way, a wide range of low-energy devices.
Target applications primarily include autonomous robotics and stand-alone remote sensing.
This project is looking into the fundamentals of stacking, in terms of structural materials as well as the integration of multiple units under humid conditions. One of the main findings from the ongoing work into stacks running under continuous flow, is the introduction of air (or gas) gaps between units in a cascade, which maximises the collective performance. Low cost materials as well as 3D printed polymers have formed part of this investigation.
Further developments may include the powering of other specialised off-the-grid equipment such as portable IT systems, environmental monitoring tools and medical support apparatus.
